Somali federal troops surrounded the country's Supreme Court hours after dismissed Supreme Court Chief Justice Baashe Yusuf Ahmed ruled on Nov. 5 that recent constitutional amendments extending presidential terms' duration from four to five years did not apply retroactively and that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's term expired last May rather than in May 2027, Hiiraan Online reported on Nov. 6. Baashe's ruling came after Mohamud removed him from office on Nov. 4 and replaced him with ally Ibrahim Idle Suleiman, a move that the Supreme Court rejected and that sources speaking to Garowe Online said was aimed at preempting a ruling against the constitutional reforms.
