On Nov. 4, Ethiopia ordered six Sudanese diplomats stationed at the Sudanese Consulate in Assosa, Benishangul-Gumuz region, to leave within 48 hours and closed the consulate, prompting Sudan to close Ethiopia's Consulate in Gedaref, eastern Sudan, and expel its staff, Reuters reported on Nov. 5. These developments follow Sudan's Nov. 1 announcement that it had lodged complaints with the U.N. Security Council and the African Union's Peace and Security Council over Ethiopia's alleged support for cross-border drone attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, into Sudan.
