South Korea's defense ministry announced on Nov. 5 that it plans to extend beyond 2026 its Gulf of Aden anti-piracy mission, ongoing since 2009, and expand it to the waters near Duqm, Oman, some 400 miles (644 kilometers) from the Strait of Hormuz. The government plans to expand the Cheonghae Unit in charge of the mission beyond its current 4,400-ton destroyer, maritime helicopter and 300 troops to include a P-8 Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft and 75 more service members.
