South African company Grindrod announced that it had held its inaugural test train journey on the country's North-East rail corridor, making it the first private company to operate on South Africa's rail network under its new access regime, Engineering News reported on Nov. 3. Grindrod said it expected to begin commercial operations along the North-East corridor in 2027, with plans to transport around 288,000 tons of coal from South Africa's Mpumalanga province to the Matola port terminal, located next to Mozambique's capital, Maputo.
