China's People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command said its naval and air forces conducted combat readiness patrols around the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea and had strengthened such operations during October, Reuters reported on Oct. 30. The command said the operations aimed to increase control over the surrounding waters and airspace in response to alleged Philippine provocations, while China's coast guard separately announced law-enforcement patrols around the shoal.
