Malian armed forces and Russia's paramilitary Africa Corps on Oct. 6 took control of Kidal, a symbolic city in northern Mali that had been held by the Azawad Liberation Front, or FLA, since April, RFI reported on Oct. 7. The FLA withdrew before Malian forces entered the city, meaning there was no major direct battle.
