The U.S. commander of the III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa announced late on Oct. 6 that operations at all U.S. bases in the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa would be paused from Oct. 7-9, and that afterward there would be a one-month period with a late-night curfew for Marines, who are not allowed free time off base. Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with newly elected Okinawa Gov. Genta Koja and urged greater U.S.-Japan discussions to prevent incidents involving U.S. Marines.
