The Ethiopian military recaptured the locality of Erebti in the Afar region from the Tigray People's Liberation Front, or TPLF, and its allies after the rebels appeared to be exiting the area, independent journalist Thomas Van Linge reported on X on Oct. 1. This comes as local reports indicated that pro-government forces seized the town of Mehoni/Mekoni in southern Tigray, located around 125 kilometers (about 78 miles) by road to Tigray's regional capital Mekele, and have allegedly encircled the town of Samre, located around 60 kilometers to the southwest of Mekele.
