China's commerce ministry announced on Sept. 28 that it had agreed with the United States to cut tariffs on roughly $30 billion of "non-strategic" U.S. imports in return for U.S. tariff cuts on roughly $30 billion of Chinese imports under their Board of Trade mechanism. The Chinese goods benefiting from exemptions are concentrated in toys, kitchenware, consumer electronics and other household goods commonly purchased around the Christmas shopping season, and the U.S. goods involved agricultural products, chemicals, coal and medical instruments.
