President Salva Kiir dissolved South Sudan 's transitional government after its mandate expired on Sept. 22, removing First Vice President Riek Machar, the other four vice presidents and all national and deputy ministers and dissolving the transitional parliament, state governments and assemblies, BBC reported on Sept. 23. Kiir subsequently appointed a caretaker administration to run the country until the scheduled Dec. 22 elections, while retaining his own presidential powers until a new president is sworn in.
