Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi vowed to disarm Iranian-backed Iraqi militias by June 2027, extending the deadline from Sept. 30, 2026 , The New York Times reported on Sept. 21. Al-Zaidi unveiled a phased disarmament process that would begin with a 90-day initial pause on Iraqi militia attacks and a cessation of U.S. attacks on militias, after which Baghdad would begin to confiscate weapons.
