The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, won the Sept. 20 state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 38.2%, ahead of 35.5% for the Social Democratic Party, or SPD, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union, or CDU, fell short of the threshold to enter the state parliament, Reuters reported on Sept. 21. In Berlin, the Left Party won 25.7% against 18.8% for the CDU.
