On Oct. 15, a 0.4% fee on select merchant transactions above 2,000 rupees (about $20) made through India's Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, will kick in, marking the end of more than six years of free payments through the popular homegrown system, Reuters reported on Sept. 16. The National Payments Corporation of India, which operates the UPI and sets the rules governing its payment network, said the revenue is intended to support greater investment in payment infrastructure, resilience, cybersecurity, innovation and customer service.
