Much of Ethiopia has experienced 50% less rainfall during its June-September rainy season compared with yearly averages due to the ongoing El Nino weather event, Addis Standard reported on Sept. 15, based on findings from the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. The state-owned utility Ethiopian Electric Power, or EPP, announced on Aug. 29 that it would implement "strict water usage protocols and integrated dam strategies" to "compensate" for the rainfall deficit, and the company cut power supply to bitcoin miners in the country — an important source of revenue — by 75% as of mid-September.
