The lower house of Spain's parliament approved a law that would grant citizenship to 70,000-120,000 indigenous Sahrawis born in the disputed Western Sahara territory before 1977, as well as their direct descendants, Reuters reported Sept. 10. Spanish officials have framed the law as rectifying the "historical injustice" committed against Sahrawis under Spanish colonial rule. Morocco's response has so far been mixed, though a member of its Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs previously said Rabat had "no problem" with Sahrawis obtaining Spanish citizenship, noting that some have done so in the past.
