Bangladesh's parliament passed two bills to dissolve the controversial Rapid Action Battalion special law enforcement unit, establish a new Special Response Battalion as its replacement, and expand the Armed Police Battalion's criminal investigation powers, The Business Standard reported Sept. 10. Many opposition lawmakers rejected the bills, claiming they effectively enable the Rapid Action Battalion to continue under a different name and fail to provide sufficient oversight — charges the government has denied.
