South Africa's state-owned utility Eskom posted a profit after tax of 30.3 billion rand ($1.9 billion) for fiscal year 2026, which ended in March, up from 14 billion rand in fiscal year 2025, News24 reported on Aug. 31. The increased profits were driven by a sharp drop in nationwide rolling blackouts, known locally as loadshedding, to only four during fiscal year 2026, with the last instance of loadshedding occurring in May 2025. Eskom also reported that its debt had fallen to around 320 billion rand in June, down from 372 billion in March 2025, despite municipal arrears rising to 119 billion rand.
