Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi announced that he would step down from his position on Sept. 4 and retire from active political life, The Citizen reported on Aug. 25. Nchimbi's resignation comes amid reported tensions with President Samia Suluhu Hassan over his alleged presidential ambitions and disagreements over the handling of security forces' deadly crackdown on opposition supporters during and after Tanzania's October 2025 general election .
