Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane accused the ruling Liberation Front of Mozambique, or Frelimo, of using the Defence and Security Forces to intimidate opposition parties following the disruption of a National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique, or ANAMOLA, event in Quelimane, Zambezia province, Aimnews reported on Aug. 18. Security forces reportedly used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse ANAMOLA supporters marking the party's first anniversary, injuring several people and prompting condemnation from media groups.
