Zambia's incumbent presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema is reported to be leading with 62% of the vote against opposition candidate Brian Mundubile's 36%, with results from 71% of constituencies counted, putting Hichilema on course for reelection, Al Jazeera reported on Aug. 17. Mundubile's camp alleged an armed raid on his residence, while the government said security forces arrested 11 people, including senior opposition figures, and seized military-grade weapons that the government said were linked to an alleged insurrection plot; the opposition described the operation as politically motivated.
