Romania will likely shut the second and last reactor at its Cernavoda nuclear plant as early as Aug. 13 after water levels in the Danube River fell below new record lows, operator Nuclearelectrica said on Aug. 11. The same day, Germany's waterways agency said navigable depth at the Rhine's Kaub chokepoint fell to 15 centimeters (about 6 inches), below the previous 25 centimeter record low recorded in 2018, forcing a halt to commercial sailings.
