Indian authorities employed water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse thousands of young demonstrators marching on Jharkhand's state legislature in Ranchi to protest irregularities surrounding recent state civil service examinations, Reuters reported on Aug. 10. While authorities have held six rounds of talks with students and reportedly agreed to most of their demands, they have refused to cancel certain exams or to order an agency such as the national Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the alleged exam irregularities.
