Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, a more moderate member of the conservative Kuomintang, helped organize on July 25 the largest protest in Taiwan since President William Lai took office in May 2024, the South China Morning Post reported on July 27. The protest leaders condemned the Lai government for allegedly mishandling a scandal over tainted cooking oil, with KMT lawmakers and Chiang reiterating calls for a no-confidence vote against Premier Cho Jung-tai.
