U.S. President Donald Trump signed three presidential proclamations on July 20 to place 50% tariffs on a list of imports from Canada using Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, more commonly known as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, over alleged Canadian discrimination against U.S. commerce starting Aug. 19. The list includes tariffs on electrical control panels, networking and telecom data equipment gear, plastic bags, cement, metal furniture and liqueurs, all of which totaled about $20 billion in trade in 2025, or about 5% of total U.S. imports from Canada that year.
