Iranian officials said regional mediators had proposed a 10-day truce between the United States and Iran to facilitate progress in bilateral negotiations, Reuters reported on July 20. U.S. and Iranian attacks have further expanded in geographic scope and target set since Iranian strikes killed two U.S. troops during July 17 attacks on Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Air Base.

Since July 17, the U.S. military has targeted Iranian military sites along the coastline, Darkhovin nuclear power plant in Khuzestan province and areas near Iran's northern city of Tabriz, while Iran has targeted Aqaba, Jordan, as well as U.S. military sites in the region. In a separate incident, a U.S. servicemember was killed in a controlled explosion from an Iranian attack in northern Iraq. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said two oil tankers exploded off the coast of Oman, using the U.N.-backed shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz, and said the transit route would remain unsafe as long as the U.S. military conducted operations in the region. Meanwhile, Israel received additional U.S. refueling planes over the weekend, which would provide more operational flexibility for any expanded U.S. campaign against Iran.
