Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said that "there will be no more elections" that allow the opposition to try to seize control of the government, DW reported on July 19. He also said his government will work "on laws to put up a wall, a blockade, against the coup plotters, the traitors, and that no matter how much money the Yankees [the United States] give them, they will not be able to" take power.

Ortega made the comments during a rally in Managua to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution. Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, have slowly solidified control over the government over the last several years, with recent votes seeing significant electoral fraud and facing international criticism. Ortega said the National Assembly will implement reforms that prevent opposition forces from carrying out political activities.
