Sammy Waweru of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, or DCP, decisively won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, delivering former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua a significant political boost in the strategically important Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general election, Daily Nation reported on July 17. After his win, Waweru thanked voters, pledged inclusive leadership and condemned the electoral violence reportedly carried out by state-sponsored "goons."

Gachagua launched the DCP on May 15, 2025, following his fallout with Ruto and impeachment, positioning the party as another vehicle to challenge Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election. Mt. Kenya is one of Kenya's largest voting blocs and has historically been influential in determining presidential outcomes, and its support can significantly shape national alliances ahead of elections.
