Nigeria's military announced on July 10 that it had rescued all 44 students and teachers abducted on May 15 from three schools in Osiire district, Oyo state, Al Jazeera reported on July 12. The operation reportedly dismantled the kidnappers' support network, including informants and hideouts in Old Oyo National Park, resulted in the arrest of several suspects, and came at the cost of several soldiers' lives.
The abduction drew significant attention because it occurred in Nigeria's southwest rather than the north, where such attacks are more common. It also triggered nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Union of Teachers in June.
