Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has remained exiled in India since her August 2024 popular ouster, plans to return to Bangladesh in December alongside colleagues from her Awami League party to surrender, Reuters reported on July 10. Neither Bangladesh's government nor India's foreign ministry immediately commented on the report, which is the first time Hasina has floated a timeline for her return.

Since Hasina's popular ouster, Bangladeshi authorities have repeatedly urged India to extradite her to face justice for alleged state abuses during her tenure. A Bangladeshi court in November 2025 sentenced her to death in absentia specifically for her role in authorities' lethal crackdown on the 2024 anti-government protests that ultimately ousted her. However, India — whose Prime Minister Narendra Modi for years viewed Hasina as a close regional partner — has long refused to grant Bangladesh's extradition request. Beyond Hasina, the exiled party colleagues who may return alongside her reportedly include the former home minister.
