During a visit to Melbourne, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured an agreement under which Australia will sell uranium to India for civilian power generation, Bloomberg reported on July 9.

Although Australia agreed to supply uranium to India in 2014, exports were delayed for years over concerns the material could be diverted for military use. After more than a decade of negotiations, India provided assurances that Australian uranium would be used exclusively for peaceful civilian purposes. The breakthrough was significant because Australia has traditionally restricted uranium exports to countries that have not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, including India.
