Algeria's election authority announced the provisional results of the July 2 parliamentary elections, with the pro-government National Liberation Front, Democratic National Rally and Future Front parties securing a total of 222 seats in the 407-seat lower house, giving the bloc a clear majority, TSA Algerie reported on July 6. The election had the lowest turnout in Algeria's legislative history, with only an estimated 21% of the voting population casting ballots, just below the 23% who voted in the 2021 parliamentary election.
The 2026 Algerian parliamentary elections were the second since the 2019 Hirak pro-democracy movement began. While the 2019-21 Hirak movement experienced initial success and led to the April 2019 resignation of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, government crackdowns and the COVID-19 pandemic significantly weakened it. In recent years, Tebboune has set about consolidating his power and pushing out political opposition parties. To this end, in March, Parliament passed legislation stipulating that the government may legally dissolve political parties if they boycott two consecutive elections.
