Iran began funeral observances for former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on July 4 in Tehran, kicking off almost a week of proceedings throughout other major cities that will end on July 9 in Mashhad, Reuters reported on July 5. Ali Khamenei's son and successor, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, has been absent from the proceedings, with Iranian officials citing security concerns, though three of Ali Khamenei's other sons have attended.

Mojtaba Khamenei was injured in the same strike that killed Ali Khamenei and many of his family members at the start of the Iran war. Though the extent of Mojtaba Khamenei's injuries has been disputed, he has not made a public appearance or released an audio or video recording since becoming the country's supreme leader in early March, suggesting his injuries are likely extensive. On June 29, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Mojtaba Khamenei was "marked for death."
