Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia, for the first stop on his tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, The Times of India reported on July 6. Before departing New Delhi, Modi said the trip would reinforce India's Act East policy and MAHASAGAR Vision, India's framework for enhancing maritime security and regional cooperation across the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific.
Just weeks after Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended a meeting of the Quad, the strategic grouping of India, Australia, Japan and the United States, on June 16, the Pentagon announced plans to rename U.S. Indo-Pacific Command as U.S. Pacific Command, reversing a change made during the first Trump administration. Modi's recent diplomacy reflects a broader effort to strengthen India's engagement across the Indian Ocean, including outreach to western Indian Ocean partners such as Seychelles and Mauritius in June, before shifting focus to the eastern Indian Ocean through talks with Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on July 1-3.
