OpenAI's executives have discussed giving the U.S. government a 5% stake in the artificial intelligence lab in an effort to secure good relations with the Trump administration, the Financial Times reported July 2.

CEO Sam Altman has argued that giving the public a financial stake in the company is the best way to ensure the upside of AI is shared with the public. OpenAI's executives have also suggested that other U.S. AI labs allocate 5% stakes to the U.S. government through a vehicle modeled after the Alaska Permanent Fund.
