Indirect technical talks between the United States and Iran in place in Doha, Qatar, focused on the Strait of Hormuz yielded progress, a Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson said July 1. That same day, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that Iran will establish a U.S.-Iran communication channel to report ceasefire violations, but even so, there was little indication of breakthroughs on disputes over administering the Strait of Hormuz or any confirmation that $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds would be released.
The next round of talks is expected after funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, set for July 4-9. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have reaffirmed their "red lines" in negotiations, calling for shipping companies to adhere to Iranian conditions — including coordinating with authorities and using Iranian-approved routes — to transit the Strait of Hormuz, and rejecting any efforts to negotiate on Iran's missile and drone capabilities.
