A Peruvian court ruled that the government oversees the Chinese-owned port of Chancay, Bloomberg reported July 1. The decision overturns a January ruling declaring the terminal exempt from some oversight by Peru's infrastructure regulator, Ositran, which U.S. officials warned undermined the country's sovereignty.
Chancay is a privately owned port operated by the Chinese state-owned COSCO, which aims to reduce shipping times between Latin America and Asia. It was inaugurated in November 2024 during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Peru for a summit. Keiko Fujimori is a right-wing politician with strong ties to Peru's political establishment and business community.
