Claude AI developer Anthropic announced June 30 that it would restore access to Claude Fable 5 on July 1 after the U.S. Commerce Secretary announced that the government had lifted export controls on Fable 5 and Mythos 5, the more advanced cybersecurity-focused AI model also blocked last month. Anthropic also announced that for some routine tasks, including coding and debugging, Fable 5 would fall back to Opus 4.8.

The U.S. Commerce Department issued export controls on June 12, blocking Anthropic from allowing foreigners from accessing its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models, just days after they were released. The decision was triggered by Amazon sharing a report with the White House in which its researchers described how they were able to "jailbreak" (i.e., bypass guardrails in) Mythos 5, a vulnerability that nefarious actors and U.S. rivals, like China, could exploit to conduct cyberattacks.
