The deputy director-general of Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA), Hsieh Ching-chin, told lawmakers on July 1 that Taiwanese ships should ignore boarding and inspection requests from Chinese vessels. He added that the CGA would "sail between the two ships to separate them" if related situations became urgent, and that it would intervene even if the harassed vessel in Taiwanese waters was foreign.
Hsieh's comments come after China's Maritime Security Administration (MSA) conducted a "special maritime traffic law-enforcement operation" in the waters east of Taiwan in early June. During the operation, some MSA vessels radioed at least three Taiwanese commercial vessels to inquire about their ports of origin and destination. After some vessels responded, Taiwan's coast guard radioed them all to ignore the MSA requests.
