Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa selected 70 parliamentary legislators — including 15 women and some representatives of minority groups — ahead of the parliament's first session on July 6, AP reported July 1. The inaugural legislative session is expected to focus on establishing parliamentary committees and electing a speaker.

Two-thirds of the 210 lawmakers in Syria's new parliament were chosen by regional electoral colleges, with the rest directly appointed by al-Sharaa. Most of the indirect parliamentary elections were held in October 2025, though voting in Syria's Kurdish-majority northeast did not take place until May due to the region's initial exclusion from the ballot. Elections in the Druze-majority province of Sweida have also been delayed indefinitely due to poor security conditions.
