The United States and Iran have agreed to halt the latest round of exchanges, which were triggered by a June 25 Iranian attack on a cargo vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz on a U.S.-backed route, Axios reported June 28. The clashes included attacks near the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian strikes targeting U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait. Both the United States and Iran plan to meet June 30 in Doha, Qatar, to resume negotiations focused on reopening the strait.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have been rising due to disputes over the administration of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has continued to demand that vessels transit the strait only on Tehran-approved routes, coordinated with Iranian authorities, and has rejected alternative routes, including a U.S.-backed one near the coast of Oman.
