Tanzanian authorities and law enforcement officials have vowed to use force against planned demonstrations on July 7, known as Saba Saba Day, accusing protestors of planning to block roads, destroy public and private property and attack civilians, The Chanzo reported on June 24. Activists and youths calling for protests on Saba Saba are demanding accountability for state violence following the October 2025 general election, political reforms, a lower cost of living, and the resolution of recent tensions between the mainland and the Zanzibar archipelago.
Tanzania's October 2025 general election was marred by widespread anti-government unrest, on which security forces heavily cracked down, with independent reporting indicating that more than 2,500 people may have been killed. Hassan commissioned an inquiry into the violence, but the so-called Chande report, published in April, found that only 518 people had been killed and did not point to any senior official responsible for the violence.
