Chile's Senate gave initial approval to the government's major economic bill with a 26-23 vote, La Tercera reported on June 24. The bill will now progress to an article-by-article debate.
The government budget office estimates that Chile's deficit will reach 2.4% of GDP in 2026 without considering the bill's economic impact, up from the 1.8% projected by the previous administration. Chile's Chamber of Deputies approved the bill in May. The Senate's initial approval came as President Jose Antonio Kast passed his 100th day in office. Kast has struggled to fulfill his main campaign promises around security and the economy.
