Colombian far-right outsider candidate Abelardo de la Espriella won the June 21 presidential runoff election with 49.66% of the vote, compared with leftist Sen. Ivan Cepeda's 48.70%, according to an initial ballot count, El Colombiano reported the same day. Cepeda said he would request the recount of 33,000 voting stations and wait for judges to confirm the count before accepting the results.

Turnout was record-high at 64%, and this was Colombia's tightest presidential race in three decades, underscoring heightened polarization. De la Espriella was elected after performing better than polls indicated and winning the first round vote on May 31. He campaigned on reversing outgoing President Gustavo Petro's security, economic, social and security agenda. His victory comes amid a broader shift to the right across Latin America.
