Unknown attackers targeted Niger's Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey for over two hours, leading to gunfire and explosions that killed at least 35 people, 22 of whom were assailants, before security forces regained control, RFI reported on June 18. Authorities confirmed the airport remained operational, and they have launched a large-scale security operation and established checkpoints across the capital, including around key government buildings.
Islamic State Sahel Province previously attacked the airport, which hosts a key military drone facility, at the end of January, resulting in reported damage. The group is primarily active in western Niger. Islamic State Sahel Province is also reported to have coordinated with Islamic State West Africa Province fighters active in the Lake Chad Basin and to have used kamikaze drones in its operations.
