Brazil's Federal Police carried out a search and seizure warrant on Sen. Jaques Wagner, a close ally of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as part of an investigation into the financial fraud and corruption scheme involving Banco Master bank, CNN Brasil reported on June 18. Separately, Estadao reported on June 17 that lower house speaker Hugo Motta had asked Daniel Vorcaro, the owner of Banco Master, for at least $4.4 million in a loan for a relative.
Wagner is the leader of the government in Congress and has served in various Cabinet positions under Lula and under former President Dilma Rousseff, who succeeded Lula between his second and third terms. Until now, links between Vorcaro and politicians had been limited to figures on the right, especially Sen. Ciro Nogueira, who served as former President Jair Bolsonaro's chief of staff, and Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's eldest son. Brazil's central bank liquidated Banco Master in November 2025 amid a severe liquidity crisis.
