Cuba's top political leaders are meeting on June 17 to discuss economic proposals to stave off an economic collapse amid U.S. pressure, Bloomberg reported on June 16. President Miguel Diaz-Canel posted on X that "the Extraordinary Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of #Cuba will take place, to evaluate proposals for transformations that we recently announced in statements to the press."

The U.S. government under President Donald Trump has significantly escalated pressure on Cuba throughout 2026, preventing fuel deliveries to the island for months and significantly worsening electrical grid challenges. The U.S. State Department said in a June 16 post on X that it has issued a warning letter to an unspecified foreign company for its involvement in the trafficking of confiscated property in Cuba, adding that the company's executives could be subject to immigration restrictions.
