Italy will deploy a SAMP/T air defense system to Turkey's 3rd Main Jet Air Base Command in Konya to boost Turkey's air defenses over the next six months, Turkey's defense ministry said in a June 17 statement. This will be the first deployment of such a system in Turkey, and it will follow the deployment of Patriot missiles to Turkey during the Iran war.
Turkey came under attack four times during the most heated parts of the Iran war in March, with missiles being intercepted each time. In 2019, the United States declined to sell Ankara Patriots that included technical blueprints, citing national security concerns about transferring the technology. The move caused Turkey to purchase a Russian S-400 system instead, sparking backlash in NATO that led to Turkey's removal from the F-35 program. Since then, Turkey has kept the S-400 system but has not deployed it, as negotiations continue over how to manage the Russian system, which NATO leaders worry Moscow could use to gather intelligence on NATO's hardware.
