The Abuja Federal High Court directed Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister five opposition parties, including presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar's African Democratic Congress, or ADC, and prevent them from partaking in Nigeria's 2027 general election for failing to meet electoral performance thresholds set out in the Nigerian Constitution, the Daily Trust reported on June 15. Atiku condemned the judgment as a threat to Nigerian democracy, with his party stating that it would appeal the ruling "through all legal and constitutional channels."
The Nigerian Constitution stipulates that the Independent National Electoral Commission can deregister political parties that have not won any elective positions in the previous round of elections at the federal, state and local government levels or secured 25% of votes in a state. The case against the ADC and the four smaller opposition parties was filed by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators, which argued that the party failed to meet the aforementioned electoral performance thresholds.
