Anthropic suspended access to its two most powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all customers on June 12 after the Department of Commerce imposed export controls requiring Anthropic to block access for foreign nationals, including its own foreign employees. The Department of Commerce's order reportedly came after Amazon shared a report with the Trump administration detailing a jailbreak that enabled access to Mythos 5 in a way that threatened U.S. national security, triggering White House concern about China's access to the model.

This is not the Trump administration's first clash with Anthropic. On Feb. 27, President Donald Trump signed an order directing federal agencies to phase out the use of Anthropic's products within six months, following a disagreement over expanding the military's use of Anthropic's AI model, Claude. The same day, the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a national security supply chain risk, meaning no contractor, supplier or partner doing business with the military could conduct "any commercial activity" with the company.
