Cheng Li-wun, the chair of Taiwan's main opposition party, Kuomintang, met with six U.S. members of Congress on June 12 in Washington, D.C., including Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan, who urged Cheng to fund more U.S. arms purchases, and Montana Sen. Steve Daines, a close ally of President Donald Trump. This comes after a meeting between Cheng and high-level U.S. National Security Council officials at the White House on June 10 was first downgraded to a lower-level meeting before being canceled altogether, according to Liberty Times on June 11.
After Trump's May 14-15 visit to Beijing to meet with President Xi Jinping, the White House later in May announced it had delayed a $14 billion arms package to Taiwan, which Trump called a "very good negotiating chip" for trade talks with China.
